Generalized Poverty-gap Orderings

چکیده

Abstract This paper provides a characterization of new class ordinal poverty measures that are defined by means the aggregate generalized gap. To be precise, we propose to use sum differences between transformed fixed line and level income each person below as our measure. If transformation is strictly concave, resulting measure inequality averse with respect incomes poor. In analogy some existing results on measurement, show only relative (scale-invariant) members based concave power functions or natural logarithm. Moreover, allow for useful decomposition akin those examined in earlier contributions. an empirical analysis, compare logarithmic variant index two well-established alternative orderings. Unlike numerous indices appear literature, ours do not explicitly depend number poor total population size, thereby ruling out any direct influence head-count ratio comparisons.

Poverty Orderings

This paper reviews the literature of partial poverty orderings. Partial poverty orderings require unanimous poverty rankings for a class of poverty measures or a set of poverty lines. The need to consider multiple poverty measures and multiple poverty lines arises inevitably from the arbitrariness inherent in poverty comparisons. In the paper, we first survey the ordering conditions of various ...

Poverty Orderings and Welfare Dominance

This paper examines the partial orderings of discrete distributions derived from various poverty indices and sets of welfare functions. The poverty ordering with respect to some index P is the ordering obtained when P ranks consistently over a range of admissible poverty lines. The poverty orderings derived from the headcount ratio, the per-capita income gap and another "distribution-sensitive"...

Minimum Distribution-Sensitivity, Poverty Aversion, and Poverty Orderings

This paper introduces a measure of distribution-sensitivity, which is similar to Arrow-Pratt's measure of risk aversion, for a poverty index. The measure also gauges poverty aversion and has a clear and straightforward interpretation. Using this measure, we can define various classes of minimum distribution-sensitive poverty indices. We show that the ordering condition for such a class of pover...

Poverty Orderings when Welfare Comparisons are Uncertain

In applied welfare economics, equivalence scales for household composition and size corrections, and appropriate price de‡ators are minimum requirements to perform interhousehold comparisons of welfare, measured via household income or consumption information. In practice, the information available is insu¢cient and only approximate price or household composition corrections are available. Pove...

Gap Embedding for Well - Quasi - Orderings 1

Given a quasi-ordering of labels, a labelled ordered tree s is embedded with gaps in another tree t if there is an injection from the nodes of s into those of t that maps each edge in s to a unique disjoint path in t with greater-or-equivalent labels, and which preserves the order of children. We show that finite trees are well-quasiordered with respect to gap embedding when labels are taken fr...
